Loki and Bartleby Overcome the Odds
“Ben and Matt, I still want to see some I.D” said Robin Williams upon winning his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Good Will Hunting.
What I love about Ben Affleck and Matt Damon winning best original screenplay at the 70th Annual Academy Awards in 1997 was the true purity of the moment.
First: Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau presenting the award itself, and how excited Lemmon was for them when he called their name. (Irony: In Lemmon’s final film The Legend of Bagger Vance, he would play the older version of Damon’s character)
Second: They both shared a hug and kiss with their evening dates…their mothers.
Third: Robin expresses his gratitude for them by awarding them with a “bro-kiss”.
Fourth: Ben and Matt shout over each other acceptance speech out of pure excitement.
Fifth: They remain the same today…
La vita è bella
There are great Oscar moments. However, there is only one moment I can replay in my head that I will never forget.
Roberto Benigni’s joyous celebration of his win in the category of Best Foreign Language Film for Life Is Beautiful is absolutely one of my favorite Oscar moments. Ever. The raw emotion Benigni exuberates as he jumps up on his chair in celebration – can that ever be matched again? Seriously, watch the first minute over and over again and tell me you don’t feel incredibly happy for the guy.
Benigni also took home an Oscar for Best Actor that year. Maybe it’s my Italian heritage shining through that I really enjoy this Oscar moment, since Benigni (obviously) is Italian. We can be found to be emotional people. I found it refreshing, even at the ripe age of 7, to see someone so excited, joyous and happy to win an award. Pure, raw emotion. I loved every second of it.
It just goes to show us that indeed, life is beautiful.
